    Guserbiot develops its activities in modern facilities inaugurated in 2003. These facilities are located in a 11.000 m2, where 8200 m2 are built and distributed in different buildings for production, storage and three R+D+I laboratories (physicochemical, analytical instrumentation and biotechnology), as well as general offices for administration and customer service.

    We have modern technological equipment for research, design and development of biotechnological processes and products, such as: fermenters and downstream equipment. In addition, we have the necessary equipment for different analytical services: gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, spectrophotometry and molecular biology.

    Wine spoiled by having spoilage microoganisms in your barrels

    These risks can have very important negative economic consequences in the winery's business.

    The wineries put every effort to obtain the best wines selecting the best grapes, improving the fermetation process, assuring the best conditions to preserve them, but what can you do to put end to the risks associated with spoilage microorganisms in the barrels?.

    The wine is a safe product from the sanitary point of view, but its organoleptic quality could be affected by different factors, in particular the presence of spoilage microorganisms. Among these microorganisms, Brettanomyces, is one of them, which causes the wine quality spoilage in barrel-aged wines more often.

    In most cases,even when preventive cleaning and disinfecting protocols are applied, it could be that Brettanomyces remains in the barrel, affecting the wine to be aged. Therefore, it is very important, to control the aged wine and to carry out a microbiological analysis before to bottle the wine. This microbiological analysis will help us to decide if the wine needs special treatment to remove Brettanomyces

    A true history, about a winery which had to keep out some aged wine batches from the market, due to Brettanomyces spoilage, is described below.


  • Bendstone Case

    Environmental disaster with irreparably damage

    All of us remember the Prestige accident in November 2002. This accident caused a big ecological disaster in the Cantabric Coast, due to the quantity of contaminated spill and the size of the affected area by the spill. It had a big impact in the fishing industry, not only ecological but also economical.

    Guserbiot and A&B Laboratorios de Biotecnología carried out a research project to apply the bioremediation in the contaminated coasts in order to solve the environmental problem by means of sustainable solutions.

    A hundred microorganisms were isolated from contaminated soil and water samples, and several bacteria were selected. These selected bacteria showed a great affinity for the fuel, and they degraded it about 60 per cent in 21 days.

    The good results obtained using bioremediation, allowed to develop a bacterial consortium. This consortium is an ingredient of biological products used to bioremediate hydrocarbons contaminated soil and water.

    This real story truly represents Guserbiot philosophy, giving solutions to the problems from each sector. We are very proud to contribute to solve such a major ecological disaster as the Prestige accident.

  • Premium Yeast

    The opportunity to make your wines even more specials

    Guserbiot has developed four premium yeasts corresponding to Saccharomyces cerevisae specie, isolated and selected from different grape varieties.
    Instead of using a generic yeast in order to ensure the correct development of the fermentation, wineries have now the opportunity a premium yeast, isolated and selected by the biotechnology company Guserbiot.

    It is a pioneering product at the national level that seeks to strengthen the identity and authenticity of the wines produced by the wineries.
    The project begun in 2004, has counted on the collaboration and support of important wineries and entities related to the world of winemaking and oenology. After long term research, Guserbiot launches to the market a range of premium yeasts for the winemaking of young and aged wines. The range of products is completed with two autochthonous yeasts for Rioja Alavesa and Rioja.

    A great advance in oenlogy.
    These yeasts consume all the fermentable sugars, provide a quick and regular kinetic, have a very high fermentation capacity and a high production of glycerol. The Premium yeasts of Guserbiot, being "non generic" yeasts, isolated and selected for the winemaking of different type of wines, provide an added value to the wineries.     Brewing

    In brewing the good quality of each intredient is essential to obtain an excellent final product. Yeast is one of most important ingredient, since is the responsible for carrying out the fermetation of the malt or wheat must, transforming containing sugars in alcohol and carbon dioxide gas. In addition, its behaviour during the fermetation determines the product to elaborate (ale or lager beer), and has a great influence in the organoleptical qualities of the beer.
    On the other hand, despite the beer is not a favorable product for development of microorganisms, it has the risk of suffering alterations of microbial origin that cause the lost of quality. The most frequent alterations in beer are the enhancement of turbidity and acidity, as well as the development of undesirable aromas.
